Leaving Costa Rica for Brooklyn, NYC

Our travels trough central america has given us so much, we’ve met people that greatly influenced our lives and we’ve seen places that will always be captured in our memories. Costa Rica was the last of our destinations in Central America and wow we’re enjoying life in the big city. We’re actually in New York City!

Here we are staying with close friends in Brooklyn. As many of you already know New York has almost too much to offer. This sunday we’ve focused on Brooklyn, beginning with joining our friends for catholic church followed by a hearty brunch at famous Tom’s restaurant, a local diner so popular that there’s a usually a line outside. But don’t worry, while standing outside you will be offered both fresh orange slices and coffee by the friendly staff. Once inside you can choose from 15 different styles of homemade pancakes, a wide range of omelettes and traditional burgers and milkshakes. Everything was delicious!

Flores – Getting local

On the weekends the plaza in Flores comes to life. Here you can gather with all the locals, listen to music and have some excellent street food, so cheap that it’s almost shameful. We were lucky to arrive for the weekend in Flores and joined the festivites for two nights in the row. How about some tortillas de guaqamole con pollo? Super delicious.

Yangon – Street food

Asia is probably the uncrowned king of street food. Even here in Myanmar you can fill you tummy with local specialties on the corner of a street. Small eggs, or deep fried bread, similar tast like donuts are among the choices. But there is a lot to choose between and the streets really come to life at night with all the people looking for a bite.

As are big fans of street food it was impossible to resist trying some of it. You don’t have to pay much for a snack here in Myanmar, and often it also leads to a nice chat with some locals as well.

Bangkok – street food

It is not hard to find cheap street food in Bangkok, the place is literally crawling with options. Most of the places also serve up a better pad thai then any restaurant at home for a 1/5 of the price.

So after over a month in India and Sri Lanka, tired of rice and curry we felt good to be back in Bangkok to find excellent food just around the corner. Food that comes with a happy smile.

Together with Jeab we hit China town to get us some tasty Bangkok street food. We walked around the streets to look for a good place and like the opposite from what we are used to, Jeab rated the restaurants after how dirty it was arguing that having a lot of customers and cooking a lot of food leaves it’s marks. And sure she was right, we had some really good noodels. As the evening started to get late and Jeab needed to go home, we took dessert at a banana pancake stall on the way back before we had to say good bye to our new friend.

We could not have been more pleased with our visit in Bangkok. We met so many nice people during this weekend, and Jeab showed us another part of Bangkok, far from the backpackers beaten track of koh san road. We left the city with the strong feeling that we’d be back soon again.

Madurai – The art of Chai

One of the many reasons we’ve fallen in love with India is Masala Chai tea – heated milk mixed with black tea, spices and lots of sugar. It’s easily one of the highlights of our day. A really good cup of chai is not that hard to find while in India… they serve it everywhere, on the streets, on the train, at the restaurant and even on the beach. The absolute best cup we’ve had we found at one of the special tea bars scattered around the streets of Madurai. Here, just watching your cup getting made is a experience in it self!

The fruit song

“Cocoonut – Papaya – Waaaater meeelon – hoohoo – nam-nam-nam, beautiful ma-da-mee – pineapple? – hoohoo – nam-nam-nam”

When you are your own boss you take the weekend when you need it, or at least we do. No work just chillin. So far we have been on the road almost every day so it hasn’t been that much relaxing, until we got to Varkala where we been for nearly a week now. When it’s too hot we go down to the beach and there is this funny lady that’s strolling around the beach with lots of fruits. She sings about them, to get people to buy from her… After a couple of days you can’t resist her any longer you just have to buy something, So we did…
